There has been speculation that our friends over in the United Kingdom are planning a digital pound. So, we ask, is the UK planning a digital Pound?
Currently, the Bank of England’s stance seems clear when they recently stated: “No final decision has been made on the Digital Pound”
The statement originated from a consultation paper between the Bank of England and HM Treasury on the CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) that was undertaken a year ago in February 2023. The report states, “No final decision has been made on the Digital Pound” continued to say, that they would proceed to explore designs and feasibility of the project while focusing on “privacy and control” for users.
Both organizations stated they intended to protect access to cash for mainstream society as they know the project would not be feasible otherwise. This effectively means the launch of the CBDC intention was to bring United Kingdom residents an additional payment choice only.
Today, we respond to the digital pound consultation. We are grateful to those who contributed. With @HMTreasury work continues to explore a digital pound in the design phase, but no decision has been made to issue one.

Genuine Citizen Concerns for the United Kingdom
Over in the United Kingdom, there have been growing concerns that with the domination of the Conservative Government in office since 2010, surveillance and media cohesion have increased over financial institutions from the Government potentially creating new privacy issues for the residents of the U.K.
Funnily enough, previously it had been the Conservative Government that was pushing the Bank of England and HM Treasury for more transparency.
The Treasury kicked back recently, citing the self-regulatory trade association Crypto UK, who stated concerns that they “wanted to see much more detail from the Government and the Bank of England on this important subject including a clearer plan of action and timeline around the next steps for a digital pound”.
Anticipated Timeline for the Digital Pound
With conflicting messages and a general lack of trust between the British Government, HM Treasury, and the Bank of England, the Digital Pound launch is understandably delayed. The new forecasted timeline is that the “Britcoin” as it is nicknamed, will now be no earlier than 2025.
Further delays are anticipated because of the current political mess the Government and the Conservative party find themselves in, and the civil servants in charge of overseeing the project have been changing at regular intervals. With a General Election due to be called at any time during the next 12 months, possibly late this year or early 2025, the United Kingdom is amid a crisis.
Forecasts are clear that the Conservative Government has become so unpopular that they currently have no chance of regaining Office and that is another dagger in the timeline of the CBDC.
Amazingly, in what is a two-horse race for United Kingdom leadership, the Conservative party are currently priced as massive underdogs at (+500) with one of our top crypto betting sites, BetOnline (find out more with our BetOnline Review).
That was a bit of a tangent, but we anticipate that this will all play a part in delaying the Digital Pound.
Conclusion
So, is the United Kingdom planning a Digital Pound? Yes, they are.
The problem is that the Treasury and the Bank of England are not completely happy with the design and feasibility yet. They also have concerns being expressed to them by the self-regulatory trade association Crypto UK, who state that they want a clearer plan of action and timeline for the Digital Pound.
There is also a general misgiving that the United Kingdom Conservative Government, who have been overbearing of their society in recent times, would have greater intrusion and data over the United Kingdom’s resident’s privacy than they should in a democracy.
Regardless, the United Kingdom is in a proper mess currently, and there will be no Digital Pound forecast until after the General Election, which will be at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.
Then with a clean bill of health among the country’s civil servants who oversee the transition into the Digital Age, the delays should cease, and a Digital Pound will be rolled out in society by the Bank of England and HM Treasury sometime in 2025.
