Digital Wager Wire highlights the most significant events affecting the domestic and international sports betting and gaming industries each week throughout the year.
Maine Approves Online Casino Gambling
Governor Janet Mills had several months to contemplate the fate of iGaming in the Pine Tree State since the legislature adjourned in June. Maine’s legislature passed the iGaming bill, LD 1164, at the end of the session, and early indications were that the governor would veto the measure, as she had publicly sided against online casino gambling.
As a precedent, Governor Mills initially rejected mobile sports betting before she signed legislation to permit it a year later. Therefore, it was not surprising that she previously opposed iGaming, mirroring the opinions of the state’s Department of Health and Human Services, the Maine Gambling Control Unit, the Gambling Control Board, and the National Association Against iGaming (NAAiG), as well as the state’s two commercial casinos.
Wabanaki Tribal Talks Shift Governor’s Position
However, a conversation with the Wabanaki gaming tribes during the interim months changed her opinion.
“This fall, I met with the five elected Chiefs of the Wabanaki Nations, who each spoke passionately about the importance of this bill in offering life-changing revenue for Tribal communities, as well as providing a form of economic sovereignty for their Nations,” said Governor Mills.
“I considered this bill carefully, and while I have concerns about the impacts of gambling on public health, I believe that this new form of gambling should be regulated, and I am confident that Maine’s Gambling Control Unit will develop responsible rules and standards to hold providers of this new form of gambling accountable while ensuring that Maine’s tribes benefit from its operations,” she added.
iGaming Launch Timeline And Industry Impact
Caesars facilitates three tribal mobile sports betting partnerships, while DraftKings facilitates one. Those partnerships will likely continue when the iGaming industry is launched in what is projected to be 2027. Although the commercial casinos have been adamantly opposed to iGaming, claiming the nascent industry will diminish foot traffic at their land-based casinos and perhaps trigger job losses, the tribal leaders lauded the governor’s decision.
Chief William Nicholas Sr. of the Passamaquoddy Tribe stated, “Our economies are undoubtedly stronger due to positive state policy changes under Governor Mills. Through her leadership over two terms, she has demonstrated an unmatched commitment to tribal self-determination and prosperity, earning her place as the greatest-ever Maine governor champion for Wabanaki economic progress. We are deeply grateful for her partnership and support.”
Polymarket Signs Several Partnerships in the New Year
In the New Year, Polymarket, one of the world’s largest prediction platforms, made a significant impact by partnering with the 83rd Golden Globes ceremony, which took place on Sunday, January 11th. It was considered a groundbreaking pact for the company and the prediction industry at large, considering that its odds on the various nominees were televised to a worldwide audience.
Shayne Coplan, Polymarket CEO and founder, stated, “The Golden Globes have long been a place where audiences debate and predict what will happen next. Polymarket reflects those expectations through markets spanning entertainment and culture, and this partnership brings that perspective directly into one of awards season’s biggest moments. But pairing cultural debate with market-based probabilities, we’re giving fans a new, more interactive way to follow the show as it unfolds.”
Polymarket also made news by inking deals with the Dow Jones’ digital platforms, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, MarketWatch, and Investor’s Business Daily. Meanwhile, the company also partnered with the NHL’s New York Rangers, becoming the second prediction platform to team with an NHL franchise after the Chicago Blackhawks did the same with rival Kalshi in December.
