Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts is hoping to receive one of the three downstate casino licenses in New York and the project was recently endorsed by a former New York City Council Speaker, and now a powerful ally, Christine Quinn.
Stamps Of Approval
Wynn Resorts, in partnership with Related Companies, has a grand vision for Hudson Yards and it includes a $12 billion hotel, casino, betting, and entertainment complex that would allow visitors to enter between West 30th and 33rd Streets and 11th and 12th avenues. The plan would include an 80-story tower looming above the project with gaming facilities on the second and third floors.
A 45-second video posted on the Wynn New York City website recently received the endorsement of former New York City Council Speaker, Christine Quinn, who is currently the president and CEO of the non-profit group, Women in Need (WIN).
“I am supporting Related and Wynn New York City’s bid for the Hudson Yards because it is the one that most recognizes that the biggest problem facing this city is that of homeless families with children,” says Quinn. “I am ready for thousands of jobs for homeless moms working with Wynn New York City.”
But Quinn is not the only political heavy-hitter backing the project as the video has also been endorsed by Marc Morial, former New Orleans mayor and current President and CEO of the National Urban League, as well as Dr. Hazel N. Dukes, President of the NAACP New York State Conference.
Big Project Means More Jobs
The $12 billion project is expected to create 35,000 union construction jobs and 5,000 permanent union roles along with 1,500 housing units, 324 of which would be guaranteed affordable housing, a new kindergarten through 8th grade elementary/middle school, and a 5.6-acre public park with plenty of green areas.
There will be even more permanent jobs created by a plethora of new restaurants, shops, spas, and of course, the hospitality industries which include the hotel and casino. The gaming area would occupy only 3.6% of the entire layout but would be the primary revenue driver of the entire venue.
“The next phase of Hudson Yards is a $12 billion investment in New York’s future that, if approved by City and State officials, will create tens of thousands of jobs, 1,500 units of housing including hundreds of new affordable apartments, and billions in much-needed revenue for the City and State,” said Jeff Blau, CEO of Related Companies, in a statement.
Hudson Green: The Centerpiece of the Project
“At the center of it all is Hudson Green, a 5.6-acre rolling green park with incredible river vistas, hundreds of trees for hot summer days, gardens, a playground, and a dog park,” Blau said.
“We truly believe it will be an oasis that becomes the new calling card of the neighborhood. In the months ahead, we look forward to sharing more details of the extensive, long-term economic and community benefits our vision for Hudson Yards and Wynn New York City will bring to New York.”
Other projects are also being considered but the gaming commission is expected to award the three downstate casino licenses by December 31, 2025, after reviews by local and state boards.
