The NFL has gone to great lengths to protect the integrity of the league from unscrupulous gambling activity and has also renewed its commitment to the National Council on Problem Gambling with a multi-million-dollar grant.
Shared Commitment
The National Football League awarded a three-year, $6.2 million grant to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) in October 2021. It was the largest donation ever extended to the organization in its nearly 50-year history.
The partnership proved to be fruitful for both parties, and the league has once again awarded a grant, with a little bump for inflation, to $6.4 million over three years to continue the NCPG’s efforts to stem the tide of problem gambling at American top-rated sportsbooks.
“Our partnership with NCPG underscores the vital impact of their work and our ongoing commitment to advocate for and support responsible gambling initiatives,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility.
“We are proud to leverage our platform and resources with NCPG’s expertise to raise awareness, provide education, and help prevent problem gambling. We look forward to our continued partnership with NCPG and expanding the reach of their impactful programs,” she added.
Where Does the Money Go?
The money will be used for the NCPG’s three core initiatives:
- Strengthening and updating the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER), which is a free resource for those affected by compulsive gambling or who know a compulsive gambler. The most recent influx of funds will expand its nationwide reach and improve services for those in need.
- The Agility Grants program is the first of its kind to serve communities that may not have access to counseling and gambling addiction programs in its area.
- The NCPG’s ResponsiblePlay.org website will also be updated to make more people aware and educated about responsible gambling practices.
NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte stated, “We are profoundly grateful for the NFL’s renewed investment in NCPG, which will enable us to grow the essential prevention, education, and awareness initiatives that were established through their initial grant. This partnership has been instrumental in advancing our mission of minimizing gambling-related harm. We look forward to building on the significant progress we’ve made together over the past three years and exploring new avenues for impact.”
The expired grant proved to be immensely helpful in funding staffing increases, updated technological platforms, and improved data collection efforts from the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network’s 28 contact centers around the nation.
Perhaps as important as any one of those initiatives is the licensing of the well-known 1-800-GAMBLER phone bank, which can route calls to the appropriate contact center to provide assistance and counseling to those in that area.
The helpline showed an increase of 104% from 2020 to 2023, which reflects the greater reach the program has achieved and its increased public awareness of the services available to those who seek help.
Since its inception in 2021, the NCPG’s ResponsiblePlay.org website has attracted over 750,000 visitors and provides facts about problem gambling as well as where to find resources available to those who visit.
